5 Signs Your PCB Needs Immediate Attention

May 5, 2026·4 min read

Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) are at the heart of virtually every piece of industrial electronics. Catching PCB problems early can prevent complete equipment failure and costly production downtime.

Sign 1: Burnt or Discoloured Components — Dark spots, burnt traces, or discoloured components are clear indicators of overheating or overcurrent events. Even if the board still functions, these components will fail soon.

Sign 2: Visible Physical Damage — Cracks in the PCB substrate, broken solder joints, or physically damaged components indicate the board has suffered mechanical or thermal shock. Continuing to run damaged boards risks further damage to connected equipment.

Sign 3: Intermittent Faults — If your equipment works sometimes but not others, a failing solder joint or cracked component is usually the cause. These intermittent faults are often dismissed until they become permanent failures.

Sign 4: Corrosion or Moisture Damage — White or green residue on board traces indicates moisture ingress or electrolytic corrosion. This progressively destroys copper tracks and can be cleaned and repaired if caught early.

Sign 5: Abnormal Heat During Operation — If a board is running significantly hotter than normal, components are failing or a short circuit is developing. Thermal imaging can identify the problem area before visible damage occurs.

What to Do — If you notice any of these signs, power down the equipment immediately and contact a qualified repair specialist. Continuing to run a failing PCB often causes cascade failures that dramatically increase repair cost.
